Ben Eisenga is stepping into his role as the new branch manager of Columbia Bank in Sunnyside.

He tried teaching, construction and several other careers, but nothing fit like banking.

It was in 2010 that he began working as a teller at the bank’s Pasco branch. Since then, he has worked his way through the ranks. Before becoming branch manager, Eisenga was a customer service representative at Columbia Bank’s Sunnyside branch.

He transferred to Sunnyside in 2011 and was mentored to replace newly retired branch manager Jan Weets, whose last day at the bank was last Thursday.

“I like banking because of the opportunity to work with different people,” Eisenga said, adding he also can envision a future that involves helping citizens of Sunnyside realize their dreams.

He said he wants to help businesses grow. He looks forward to helping people finance new vehicles, homes and further their educational opportunities.

“I get to be involved in the economic development of the community,” said Eisenga.

He said he has adopted Sunnyside as his home community and he sees himself serving those who live in the community for 30 years or more.

Eisenga said he enjoys the relationships he has developed in the community. “I have learned the relationships are the most important aspect of the business,” he said.

He said Weets drove home that concept when she mentored him. Eisenga said the customers will follow a person and help drive an individual’s success if a strong relationship exists.

For the past two months, Weets helped Eisenga prepare for his new role. The pair served as co-managers during that period of time. He also obtained training that will help him better serve the community.

“I am honored to work with the community. I look forward to continuing to develop the relationships here,” said Eisenga.
