RICHLAND - Representative Doc Hastings yesterday (Wednesday) announced his endorsement of Dan Newhouse of Sunnyside for the U.S. Congressional seat he’ll be vacating at the end of this year.
“I’m supporting Dan Newhouse for Congress because we need a conservative who will fight for Central Washington priorities,” Hastings said.
Newhouse and Eltopia farmer and former NFL tight end Clint Didier emerged from the 12-candidate Primary Election race in August. Didier was the top choice of the Fourth District voters, Newhouse was second.
Didier said Hastings’ endorsement of Newhouse didn’t come as a surprise.
“First, I haven’t asked Doc for his endorsement and never expected or counted on it.” - Clint Didier
“Second, I won the Primary by more than six points, so I’d expect the Republican establishment and beltway insiders back in Washington D.C. to pull out all the stops and pressure Doc to endorse their guy - who’s a career politician - instead of the grassroots favorite.
“And remember, Doc is part of Speaker John Boehner’s leadership team,” Didier said.
Hastings said Newhouse’s experience as a state legislator taught the Sunnyside farmer the importance of controlling spending and balancing budgets.
“His work as a third generation family farmer taught him the value of local control and sound science in land use decisions. And, growing up in Central Washington, he learned about the need for more water storage in this area and the responsibility of the federal government to clean up Hanford. He’ll be our advocate,” Hastings said of Newhouse.
He said he believes Newhouse is seeking to serve Central Washington for the right reasons.
“He wants to solve problems for Central Washington residents and make government responsible and accountable,” Hastings said. “I’m proud to give him my endorsement for Congress.”
Hastings, retiring at the end of this year after serving 10 two-year terms, and Newhouse made the endorsement announcement at a joint appearance at the Richland Community Center.
“Doc Hastings has provided two decades of effective leadership in congress. He’s a champion for the people of Central Washington who has helped improve the lives of countless families and individuals in this region,” said Newhouse.
“As I forge my own path forward, I will value his experience and counsel. It is an honor to receive Doc’s endorsement for Congress.”
Didier said he is pleased with his own endorsements, including those of Ron Paul of Freedomworks, Mark Levine of LibertyPac, Congressman Thomas Massie and the National Association for Gun Rights.
