Mabton hikes water rates

MABTON – As required by the terms of a $1.3 million loan the city received for water system improvements, the Mabton City Council increased the city water rates by $3 per month.

When combined with action taken earlier this year, Tuesday’s increase means Mabton’s monthly water rates have been hiked by $6 in 2014.

In response to a question by Councilwoman Sophia Sotelo, Mayor Mario Martinez reminded council the Department of Health required the increases to ensure the city would have sufficient revenues to pay back the loan for the needed improvements.

In other water-related action Tuesday evening, council approved accepting a $19,000 grant from the Department of Health to carry out a scope of work for the city’s water chlorination system.
