GIRLS PREP SOCCER
MABTON – With just one other school fielding a soccer team in the Central Washington 2B South League, the Mabton Vikings have only two league matches during the 2014 campaign.
The Lady Vikes this past Saturday lost the first of those two matches against the Warden Cougars, 3-2.
The loss leaves Mabton at 0-1 in league play, 1-5 overall.
There was just one referee calling the match, according to Mabton Coach Elizabeth Garcia. Because of that, she said, there were a couple of scoring opportunities that were called offsides.
“Both Warden’s coach and I were a little frustrated there weren’t any line judges,” said Garcia, stating the referee had some difficulty calling the plays.
Warden was the first to score. In the 16th minute Gabby Trenton found an opening in Mabton’s defense and capitalized on the opportunity.
A minute later the Lady Vikes equalized the game when forward Citlali Olivares was fed the ball by teammate Liz Martinez. Olivares scored from a left side kick.
The Cougars got the lead back on an own goal. Warden’s Cheryl Cruz shot the ball off the right corner. Mabton keeper Britnee Guerrero moved in on the ball, but a Lady Viking defender attacked the ball. The defender, in an attempt to clear it, accidently shot it into the back of the net.
Two minutes later Warden’s Miriam Scott took advantage of a loose ball and hit pay dirt to give the Cougars a 3-1 scoring advantage going into intermission.
Mabton wasn’t ready to give up, however. The defense was able to keep Warden scoreless in the second half.
Meanwhile, Olivares took the intermission talk to heart, scoring two minutes into the closing half. She kicked the ball between the crossbars, slipping it past Warden keeper Mariana Soto from the 18-yard line to draw Mabton to within 3-2.
Neither club scored again the rest of the way.
“Some defensive miscues cost us,” said Garcia.
Mabton had six attempts at scoring, and Soto denied them four times.
Warden had eight shots on goal, of which four were denied by Guerrero.
Garcia said she is looking forward to playing Warden again this coming Saturday. “There will be three refs at the match.”
Meanwhile, the Lady Vikes will return to non-league action against Naches today (Tuesday) at Mabton’s Keith Morris Field.
