Host ’Cats squeak by GHS

TOPPENISH – In the CWAC opener for both clubs yesterday, the host Toppenish Wildcats got the best of both the Grandview boys and girls tennis squads.

The ‘Cats won by 3-2 scores on both ends.

On the boys’ courts Tuesday afternoon, Grandview picked up its two victories in singles play.

Logan Alvarez, at No. 1 singles, had little trouble in dispatching Toppenish’s Daniel Mendoza, winning handily by scores of 6-0, 6-2.

Alfonso Granados got pushed to three sets, but eventually overcame Toppenish’s No. 2 singles player, Jesus Jimenez. Granados blanked Jimenez 6-0 in the opening set, fell to the Wildcat 7-5 the next set, then recovered for another 6-0 win.

“The boys in singles play made a strong showing for the ‘Hounds, continuing their winning ways,” GHS Coach Ronda Penwell said of Alvarez and Granados.

The two wins Grandview’s girls secured yesterday came in No. 2 singles play and No. 2 doubles play.

Alexandra Gonzalez lost to Toppenish’s Veronica Cruz in the opening set of their No. 2 singles match, 7-5. Gonzalez stormed back, however, winning the second set by the same score.

“Because of the fading daylight, the girls had to play a super tiebreaker to determine the winner of the match,” said Penwell, explaining the third set was simply a race to 10 points.

Gonzalez ended up getting there first, winning the super tiebreaker by a 10-4 score.

Penwell said both Gonzalez and Cruz were exhausted from the long match, but the Grandview teen “…stuck it out to earn the hard fought win.”

The victory pushes Gonzalez’s season record to 3-2 overall in singles play.

The other win for Grandview on the girls’ courts was notched by the duo of Juana Razo and McKenzie Rios.

Razo and Rios were pushed to a tiebreaker in the opening set of their No. 2 doubles match by Toppenish’s Cassandra Hernandez and Vanessa Gudino, but prevailed 7-2 in the extra session after the two pairs deadlocked at 6-6.

“They never gave up, even when they found themselves close to losing the set,” Penwell said of Razo and Rios.

The two GHS players did in the Top-Hi duo by taking the second set, 6-3.

The Grandview boys and girls tennis squads are scheduled to continue CWAC play this coming Saturday at Quincy.
