YAKIMA Jury selection starts today in a case against a Toppenish man who allegedly carjacked a vehicle and held a Granger family hostage.
Richard Eugene Yallup Jr. of Toppenish was arrested by Sunnyside police on Oct. 23, 2013, after allegedly carjacking a vehicle in Sunnyside, leading officers on a high-speed chase, shooting at officers and holding a family hostage.
Yallup, whom court documents show has nine felony convictions, is being charged with two counts of kidnapping, first-degree robbery, theft in the first, second- and third-degrees, eluding police and illegal possession of a firearm.

Police reported spotting the vehicle and pursued through neighborhoods at speeds that exceeded 100 mph, records show.
The chase ended in Granger when Yallup allegedly crashed in the Cherry Hill area, according to officials.
Police said Yallup turned and fired a shotgun at an officer, who returned fire. Neither was struck, but Yallup allegedly made a forced entry into a home, firing the shotgun into a door.
A woman was struck by the blast and injured.
Police said Yallup entered the home, taking the woman and her family hostage, records show.
The family overpowered the suspect while negotiators were attempting to make contact with him.
