BOYS PREP WRESTLING
FIFE The Sunnyside boys varsity wrestling team bested the field by more than 100 points in handily earning team honors at the Larry Brown Invitational on Saturday.
The Grizzlies tallied 269 points, with Washington’s 162 points the next highest tally in the 14-team field.
So dominant were the Grizzlies that they had a medalist in each weight class, including five individual champions.
Sunnyside’s Jose Campos (113 pounds), Jacob Mendoza (120 pounds), Josiah Rodriguez (132 pounds) and Jector Ramirez (220 pounds) all claimed titles by pinning their respective opponents in the championship matches.
The championship match of the day may well have been at 126 pounds, where the Grizzlies’ Elias Romero won a 1-0 thriller over Mountainview’s Yahya Mirzaei.
“That was a real tough weight class… there were three state placers in that bracket,” coach George Paulus said. The match was scoreless until the final five seconds when the coach said Romero “popped out” to earn the decisive point.
“Winning by a point with five seconds left… they don’t get much closer than that,” Paulus said.
Boshyar Madera (138 pounds), Moises Morales (160 pounds), Diego Castaneda (145 pounds) and J.J. Rodriguez (152 pounds) brought home second-place medals for Sunnyside after losing their respective championship matches.
“It came down to conditioning,” Paulus said of Castaneda’s 4-3 finals loss to Auburn-Mountainview’s Dylan Foley. “Diego wrestles with a lot of strength and the other kid just had a little more pre-season conditioning.”
Carlos Ramirez (170 pounds) and Daniel Huizar (195 pounds) earned third-place honors for the Grizzlies. Samuel Guerrero (106 pounds), Logan Case (182 pounds) and Jarod Perales (285 pounds) brought home fifth-place medals for Sunnyside.
The Grizzlies host Davis this coming Thursday.
