BURBANK Mabton’s girls basketball team grabbed a 52-49 overtime win at Columbia-Burbank last night, while the Viking boys fell 56-49.
The host Coyotes jumped out to a 14-7 first quarter lead on the Mabton girls, and Burbank still led 24-17 at intermission.
The Vikings turned the tide with a 17-6 third quarter run.
“Third quarter, we were a completely different team,” coach Chris McCallum said. “The girls started attacking, getting Burbank into foul trouble and changing the game… Really thought our defense picked up as well.”
It appeared Mabton might go home with a double-digit victory before the Coyotes started fouling to get back in the game, and the Vikings began missing free throws.
For the game, Mabton made just 12-of-27 attempts from the charity line.
Burbank was able to tie the game at 42-42 and force overtime.
In the overtime, Mabton’s Cristina Espinoza hit a clutch three-pointer from the right corner and teammate Soila Zaragoza drove the lane to find open teammates and helped spark the Viking victory.
Zaragoza’s 18 points, 10 rebounds and six steals paced Mabton. Desanay Guerrero and Irene Pineda added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Vikings.
Taylor Turner’s 13 points and 21 rebounds led Burbank.
“This could be a really big win for us going forward with the season,” McCallum said.
In the boys game last night, Burbank jumped out to a 10-0 lead and held on for the win.
“We got off to a slow start. We struggled to score and left some shooters wide open,” coach Brock Ledgerwood said. “Our shooting struggles continued most of the night.”
The coach also gave credit to the Coyotes’ defenders.
“Columbia-Burbank is big and long and they played a solid zone defense that gave us some troubles,” Ledgerwood said. “We were hesitant to attack and settled for jump shots that didn’t fall for us.”
Mabton used a full-court press to close the gap, pulling within four points in the final minutes.
“We just dug too big of a hole early on,” Ledgerwood said.
Roy Zavala’s 18 points led Mabton. Albert Sanchez and Diego Garza added 11 and 10 for the Vikings.
Chayce Sorbel tallied 22 points to pace Columbia-Burbank.
