OTHELLO – With two pins at a double-dual meet in Othello last night, Grandview’s Desiree Zavala (140 lbs.) improved her season record to 18-0.
Zavala defeated Warden’s Ashley Martinez, who was third in the State tourney last year, and Othello’s Elizabeth Giles.
“Desiree dominated the match (against Martinez), leading 12-1 before securing a third round pin,” said Coach Ramiro Gonzalez. “She has pinned every opponent so far this season.”
Also pinning both their opponents were Lady ‘Hounds Viannei Perez and Marizza Birrueta.
Perez, wrestling at 105 lbs., pinned Warden’s Kay Ozuna and Othello’s Maria Aubrey to bring her season record to 16-1.
Birrueta (120 lbs.) defeated Warden’s Hope Pruneda and Othello’s Sammy Garza. Birrueta also has a 16-1 record.
Also scoring a win for Grandview was Jasel Perez, who defeated Warden’s Angelica Vela in a 5-1 decision.
Lady ‘Hound Maria Reyes fought a fierce match against Othello’s Lexy Garza, losing in overtime by a 20-18 decision.
Grandview came close to a team win against defending state champion Warden, losing 39-36. The Lady Greyhounds didn’t fare as well against Othello, losing 57-24, in part due to giving up six matches to forfeits.
Grandview will travel to Kelso today (Friday) for a two-day tournament featuring more than 30 teams from around the state.
