BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Sunnyside Christian ran both Klickitat and Lyle/Wishram out of the gym last Friday and Saturday.
Breaking pressure-packed zone defenses designed to keep the Knights out of the paint, Sunnyside Christian rang up a pair of 61-29 and 59-27 victories.
The two wins pushed the Knights’ Greater Columbia 1B League record to 3-0.
At Klickitat’s gym on Friday, the Vandals tried using their size to deny the Knights access into the key.
“Klickitat is big and they came out sitting in a tight zone,” said Sunnyside Christian Coach Dean Wagenaar.
Able to build just a two-point lead with the end of the first quarter rapidly approaching, the Knights decided to switch things up.
“We went to a press, a full-court press,” said Wagenaar.
The result…a 19-0 run that gave Sunnyside Christian a 29-8 lead.
Backing off the defensive pressure with a couple minutes remaining in the first half, the Knights allowed Klickitat to close out the second quarter with an 8-1 spurt of its own.
Sunnyside Christian took what remaining suspense might have lingered and squashed it at the start of the third quarter.
“We pressed again to open the second half,” said Wagenaar, who detailed that his club went on a 25-4 run to sock the game away.
Nine of the 10 players Wagenaar put on the floor ended up scoring last Friday. The two leaders on the night proved to be a pair of underclassmen – freshman Luke Wagenaar and sophomore Justin Faber with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Besides being the leading scorer in the game, Wagenaar dished a team-best eight assists and on defense came away with four swipes.
Sunnyside Christian also got scoring efforts of 9, 7 and 6 points from – in order – Nate Scheenstra, Chance Marsh and Darren Broersma.
The 6’6” Broersma and 6’2” Scheenstra each also nabbed eight rebounds to lead the Knights to a 36 to 17 advantage over Klickitat on the boards. The two twin towers also came up with four steals apiece.
Klickitat’s top scorer proved to be 6’6” Mason Knowland.
Saturday at home against visiting Lyle/Wishram, the Knights early on broke the Cougars’ zone defense by shooting over the top of it. Sunnyside Christian’s top dead-eye turned out to be junior Connor Duim. He drilled three shots from treyland enroute to canning 13 first-half points.
Also ending up in double figures for the 59-27 winners were Scheenstra with a game-high 16 points and senior Joel Martin with 11.
Scheenstra, too, earned himself a double-double on Saturday by yanking 11 loose balls off the glass.
Martin also came through with six rebounds and three assists.
The lone Cougar to score in double figures was Lyle’s big man, Gabe Montoya. He netted 13 points.
Sunnyside Christian doesn’t return to action until this coming Friday and Saturday, when the club takes to the road for back-to-back games at Trout Lake and Bickleton.
