WARDEN – Shorthanded due to injury and illness, the Lady Grizzly wrestling team battled before losing a pair of double-dual matches Thursday night.
Against host Warden, Sunnyside fell behind 30-0 after surrendering five consecutive pins and lost to the Cougars 51-36.
The Lady Grizzlies’ comeback attempt started in the middle weight bouts.
After Sunnyside’s Stephanie Ferdinand received a forfeit at 130 lbs., teammate Rubi Ochoa (135 lbs.) earned a 14-5 victory over Warden’s Audrina Hernandez.
After Warden earned a win at 140 lbs., Sunnyside reeled off four consecutive wins.
Aylin Gonzalez (145 lbs.) started the momentum for Sunnyside with a pin in 31 seconds over Gracia Lopez.
Next up was Aylin Bautista (155 lbs.), who pinned Warden’s Aniesea Gonzalez in 2:18.
The Cougars gave up a forfeit at 170 lbs. and Sunnyside’s Belen Torres (190 lbs.) wrapped up the run by putting Dani Jolley on her back in 4:16.
The contest ended with a Warden victory at 235 lbs.
Sunnyside had a similar start in the other match last night against Othello.
The Lady Grizzlies fell behind 30-6 before rallying to a 42-42 draw against the Huskies. Othello got the dual match victory because of its 8-to-5 takedown advantage over Sunnyside.
Fernandez started Sunnyside’s rally at 130 lbs. when she pinned Othello’s Yolanda Gutierrez in 3:57.
At 135 lbs., Rubi Ochoa followed with a pin in 3:07 over Maria DeLeon.
Warden got key victories at 140 lbs. and 155 lbs., but Sunnyside was in control through the rest of the match.
Gonzalez (145 lbs.) pinned Othello’s Daisy Gonzalez in 3:49.
The Huskies had to issue a forfeit at 170 lbs., and at 190 lbs. Torres put Othello’s Rosa Pena on her back in 1:09.
In the 235-lb. weight class, Cassidy Ochoa wrapped up the evening with a dominant victory over Izzy Chavez, pinning the Husky in just 39 seconds.
Coach Casi Sambrano said he had to move a number of girls up to higher weight classes because his team was shorthanded.
“The girls did what they could, they did a phenomenal job,” he said. “Once we get everybody back it will be a different story come Districts and Regionals.”
One of Sunnyside’s final tune-ups before the postseason will be tomorrow, Saturday, at the Grandview invite.
