Newly-elected Rep. Dan Newhouse voted for an amendment to end a program that allows undocumented young people, brought to the U.S. as children, to remain in America if they are going to school and working.
President Obama proposed the Dream Act when Congress failed to take action on a fair immigration bill. The Dream Act has stringent requirements that are good for both the affected young people and our nation. It provides incentives for each immigrant to get an education and become a productive member of our community.
Each applicant must be in school, graduated from high school, obtained a GED, or be honorably discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces. Also, the applicant must not have been convicted of a felony, a significant misdemeanor or multiple misdemeanor offenses, or pose a threat to national security or public safety. Each applicant will be subject to background checks.
Some 85 percent of Sunnyside residents are Hispanic, or are related to someone directly affected by the Dream Act. But none of this made any difference to Rep. Newhouse.
Shame! Shame! Shame, Rep. Newhouse! Your vote affects a lot of your neighbors.
