Two fires consuming more than 1,600 acres to date and threatening 100 buildings – not to mention an interstate highway – led to Washington state mobilizing its resources yesterday afternoon.
The Blue Creek Fire ignited Monday 10 miles east of Walla Walla and has grown to about 750 acres and is threatening 50 homes and crops.
The day before, Sunday, the Interstate 90 fire near George was sparked and it has consumed an estimated 900 acres, threatening 50 buildings and I-90 itself.
As a result, state fire assistance was mobilized under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan in support of local firefighters working to contain the blazes.
As of this morning, no homes or out buildings were lost in either fire. However, some evacuations have taken place as a result of both fires.
The causes of both blazes remain under investigation.
