The proposed annexation by the city of Sunnyside of several properties along Emerald and Wells roads is moving forward without a property owned by Roseland LLC.

The annexation would add eight parcels of land totaling about 20 acres, including DLM Trucking, to the city.

The original proposal to annex included about six more acres of land north of DLM trucking owned by Roseland LLC. Representatives of Roseland LLC testified at the last planning commission meeting regarding the annexation proposal, asking for more information on how the annexation would affect them.

Since that meeting, Planning Supervisor Jamey Ayling provided enough information that the owners of the property decided they did not want it included in the annexation at this time.

Ayling said the withdrawal of the property from the annexation proposal does not cause any issues for the city and does not create an “island” of county land surrounded by city property.

“There’s maybe an isthmus there, but no islands,” said Ayling.

The planning commission also heard from Larry Slavens of DLM Trucking, who said the annexation will be beneficial to both the city and his company.

“The city’s going to gain in tax revenues, obviously,” he said. “The company is going to gain the additional protection of law enforcement... to have a police presence on site would be a big benefit for us. And working with the city has been easier than working with the county on many occasions.”

The commission voted unanimously to proceed with the annexation. It will now go before the county’s boundary review board before being presented to the Sunnyside City Council.
