The Washington Wine Industry Foundation has awarded $31,000 in scholarships to eight students pursuing careers in the Washington wine industry following their studies in grape and wine related fields.
One of the scholarship winners is Carina Ocampo of Sunnyside, who will be a junior this year in the viticulture and enology department at WSU.
This spring, Ocampo is entering an internship with Dr. Naidu Rayapati in the Prosser research station supporting Rayapati’s work on grapevine viruses. Ocampo hopes to pursue a graduate degree in the subject.
Ocampo was awarded the Walter J. Clore Scholarship and the Foundation Fund Scholarship. She was the sole recipient of the Horse Heaven Hills Wine Growers Scholarship.
Applications were received from 32 students; 13 awards were made to eight students for the 2015-2016 school year. Areas of study include viticulture, enology, food science, plant pathology, including post-graduate work in the areas of plant cold-hardiness, diseases and pests.
The other scholarship winners were Jadi Adiputra, Jesse Aplin, Kaelin Campbell, Zachary Cartwright, Devon Griffith, Eric Gale and Matthew Reilly.
