School improvement plans OK’d

MABTON – Following presentations by Mabton Junior/Senior High School Principal Caleb Oten, Artz-Fox Elementary School Assistant Principal Sue Sartain and fourth grade teacher Chris Medrano, the Mabton School Board this past Monday approved the school improvement plans for 2015-16.

Both schools will focus on improving math and English scores in the coming academic year.

Oten said a goal of 15 percent improvement in math scores and a 10 percent improvement in English Language Arts has been set at the junior/senior high school.

An emphasis on furthering partnerships with parents and strengthening the collaborative culture will also be targets of staff at the school.

Sartain and Medrano talked about similar goals at Artz-Fox Elementary School.

Medrano said the staff will continue using a specialist to develop practice questions that are aligned with the Smarter Balanced Assessment to prepare students for the state testing.

“For reading, a block of 120 minutes per day is being included,” said Medrano.

The school board approved the improvement plans unanimously.
