Granger Police Chief Robert Perales, a former candidate for Sunnyside City Council and once the Mabton police chief, is under investigation by the Sunnyside Police Department for a May 1 domestic incident.

Sunnyside Police Sgt. John Chumley said his officers were called to the 200 block of Yakima Valley Highway at about 11 p.m. on that date for a suspicious activity call.

Officers arrived and said they learned Perales was involved in a domestic incident there. The victim was not injured, say police, and no arrest was made at the time.

Since then, police in Sunnyside have been working with the Yakima County Prosecutor’s Office and informed the city of Granger about the incident.

Chumley said a civil anti-harassment order was issued against Perales by the Yakima County District Court.

Perales was served the order while attending a conference in Spokane, according to Chumley.

“It is our expectation that he has fully complied with the civil order,” Chumley said, noting one of the requirements of the order was that Perales relinquish all his firearms.

Perales, when called, stated he had no comment and referred the Daily Sun News to his attorney, William Pickett.

Pickett said, “There has been an allegation of harassment made by a former girlfriend…he (Perales) absolutely denies doing anything improper, including harassment.”

The attorney said Perales is cooperating with the investigation and “…fully expects to be vindicated.”

Chumley said no further details are available as the investigation continues.
