Tragedy averted

A Sunnyside High School student is alive early this morning (Tuesday) after having slipped into the open canal at the intersection of South 16th Street and East Edison Avenue, thanks to the quick thinking of his friend. The boys were on their way to school when Rogelio Ponce slid into the water head first, according to his friend, Isaac Cabrera, who went in after Ponce. Cabrera held his friend’s head above the water until rescue crews could arrive on the scene. Sunnyside police and firemen/EMTs on the scene credited Cabrera with saving Ponce’s life. The teen was transported to Sunnyside Community Hospital. Police officers gave Cabrera a ride home to change into dry clothing.
