Canal accident prompts discussion

Covering the irrigation canal along 16th Street between Edison Avenue and Yakima Valley Highway was discussed at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Councilman Spencer Martin spoke about the near fatal accident Tuesday morning at the canal, in which a boy fell headfirst and was saved by another boy from drowning.

Public Works Director Shane Fisher said the project is currently slated for next year. Martin asked if there is a way to put up temporary fencing around the canal until it is covered. Fisher said it would be up to SVID officials and said he would discuss it with them.
