BICKLETON Playing on separate sides of the same gymnasium, the Sunnyside Christian Knights and the Bickleton Pirates both pulled out victories against their opponents in the District 5 Greater Columbia Gorge league playoffs this morning.
Sunnyside Christian defeated the Klickitat-Glenwood Vandals in four sets. After taking the opener 25-13, the Knights dropped the second set 25-21. The Vandals didn't make it easy for the Knights, but Sunnyside Christian took the final two sets 25-17, 25-20 to advance to the championship match.
Sunnyside Christian Coach Stephanie Dalrymple said her team needed to step it up.
"We need to get back to playing Knights volleyball," she said.
Klickitat Coach Jaecee Hoctor was pleased with the effort by her team, which won a play-in match on Thursday to make it to the playoffs.
"We played really good," she said. "My girls were intense. They didn't let the ball drop and disrupted the Knights play. We really worked as a team."
Bickleton didn't start out so well, losing the first set to Lyle-Wishram Cougars 25-16. But the Pirates fought back with tough back-to-back victories, 25-23, 26-24. The Cougars lost heart in the final set, as Bickleton took it easily, 15-4.
Lyle Coach Lori Smith said her team helped Bickleton win.
"They were very close games," she said. "We just made too many mistakes."
Bickleton Coach Sharmi Pond was delighted with the victory.
"I'm so proud of my girls this year," she said. "They fought through it."
Lyle-Wishram and Klickitat-Glenwood will now play a loser-out game, after which Sunnyside Christian and Bickleton will meet in the championship match. The loser of the championship match will play the winner of the loser-out game to determine second and third place standings in the league.
The Top 2 teams will advance to the state volleyball tournament.
