Driver cited in Mabton Bridge crash

— A five-vehicle crash on the Mabton Bridge yesterday morning was the result of a Yakima woman following another vehicle too closely on the slick road.

That’s according to the Washington State Patrol, which cited 27-year-old Maria G. Villa-Moreno for causing her vehicle and four others to crash.

The crash resulted in a temporary closure of Sunnyside-Mabton Highway on the bridge.

Troopers say Villa-Moreno, driving a 1998 Nissan Altima, was northbound on the bridge and slowed for traffic. Troopers say she spun out into the oncoming lane. The Altima struck the bridge’s guardrail before colliding with a 2008 GMC Yukon Denali driven by Billie J. Brown, 51, of Bickleton.

The Denali also spun into the southbound lane, colliding with a 1995 Lexus driven by Nancy C. Valle, 34, of Sunnyside.

A southbound 1996 Nissan Sentra, driven by Gloria L. Santos, 47, of Sunnyside, then collided with the Lexus, resulting in another vehicle’s involvement. That vehicle, a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Ashley N. Morales, 23, of Mabton, collided with the Sentra.

Injured in the crash was Santos. She was transported by ambulance to Prosser Medical Center. Everyone involved was reportedly wearing safety restraints, the State Patrol said.

No one else involved in the crash, including a 3-month-old passenger in Santos’ vehicle, were injured, according to troopers.

All but Villa-Moreno’s Altima were reported totaled.
