PENDLETON, ORE. – Junior Griffey Sarmiento shattered his previous best 5K clocking at the Kyle Burnside Wildhorse Invitational Thursday afternoon.

Sarmiento led a large, 38-harrier contingent from Sunnyside in the boys 5,000-meter race in Pendleton. He finished with the 15th fastest time on the day, a clocking of 17:16.7, from a field that numbered 247 runners.

The winner of the boys varsity race was Umatilla senior Fabian Cardenas. He sped to a clocking of 15:54.6. That was nearly 30 seconds quicker than the runner-up clocking of 16:26.0 set by Weston-McEwen, Ore. junior Hayden Scott.

In the Wildhorse 5,000-meter cross-country race for girls, sophomore Dallas Borrego led Sunnyside’s eight-harrier charge. She placed fourth overall from the varsity field of 146 runners.

Borrego crossed the finish line in 19:53.9. That’s the first time the underclassman has ran a 5K race in under 20 minutes.

The winner of Thursday’s girls varsity race was Pendleton senior Delaney Clem. She clocked a time of 19:31.1.
