GIRLS PREP SWIMMING

— YAKIMA – The defending champion West Valley Rams eked out another first-place finish at the annual Yakima Valley High School Girls Swim Championships.

Strangely, the lone West Valley athlete to snare a win at last Saturday’s championship meet at Yakima’s Lions Pool was senior Elena Riehl.

She won the one-meter diving competition, barely edging out Sunnyside sophomore Lia Anderson. Riehl’s total score from the series of dives she completed added up to 134.85 points. Anderson’s total was 134.30.

In winning top honors last Saturday, West Valley relied on its team depth. The Rams collected three runner-up finishes from the 12 events that were staged, and garnered two third-place performances, as well.

All told, West Valley piled up 255 points at the 13-school meet. Eisenhower finished a close second in the team standings with a 248-point total.

Of the seven Lower Valley schools that competed, Sunnyside claimed the best finish in the team standings. The Grizzlies finished fourth with 170 points, followed by Prosser in fifth (116), Toppenish in seventh (66), Grandview in eighth (50), Zillah in 10th (38), Wapato in 12th (23) and Mabton last (0).

Sunnyside’s best finish on the day was Anderson’s runner-up performance in the diving portion of the meet. Other than Riehl, the sophomore easily outclassed the rest of the field, which numbered eight divers total. The next best point total behind Anderson’s score of 134.30 was an aggregate total of 129.75, set by Wapato junior Guadalupe Vaca. Sunnyside sophomore Alexi Leon was fourth in the event with a total score of 123.90.

Swimming-wise, Sunnyside’s best performances in the individual events came from senior Summer Hazzard and freshman Brielle Newhouse. Both managed fourth-place performances.

Hazzard, competing in the 100-freestyle, clocked a time of 1:01.46. The only three swimmers who bested her from the 30-girl field were Krista Wilson of Ellensburg (59.00), Kendall Rickey of West Valley (59.99) and Becky Wildman of Prosser (1:01.00).

The freshman Newhouse placed fourth from a 24-swimmer field in the 100-yard breaststroke. She touched the finishing wall in 1:21.44. The three who clocked better times than the Sunnyside underclassman included Eisenhower freshman Alyssa Cozart (1:16.62), Toppenish junior Sahara Maltos (1:18.48) and West Valley senior Kenzie Thurlby (1:20.54).

In the relay competitions last Saturday, Sunnyside’s best finish came in the 200-yard freestyle. The Grizzly foursome of Jolissa Mendoza, Allison Davis, Newhouse and Hazzard placed third with a clocking of 1:57.02 from the 16-team field. The winning relay squad, from Ellensburg, clocked a time of 1:48.34.

Grandview’s best finish at the Valley’s swim championships last Saturday was notched by senior Viannei Perez. She swam to a third-place clocking of 1:14.21 in the 100-yard butterfly. The winning time of 1:05.08 was clocked by Eisenhower freshman Maya Cunningham.
