PREP CROSS COUNTRY
EAST WENATCHEE - As has been the case all season, competing in Big Nine League cross-country races isn’t for the faint of heart.
Sunnyside’s harriers closed out CBBN regular season action yesterday at a three-mile competition in East Wenatchee, hosted by the Eastmont Wildcats. The best the Grizzlies could muster was sophomore Dallas Borrego’s sixth-place finish in the girls race, and junior Griffey Sarmiento’s 16th-place performance from a crowded boys field.
Sarmiento ran to a clocking of 17:26.4, 16th best from a field that numbered 48 varsity runners.
Also earning a ‘Top 20’ finish in the boys race for the Grizzlies was sophomore Emmanuel Ocampo. He clocked a time of 17:49.9, good for 19th-place honors.
The top finisher in the boys three-mile competition was Eisenhower junior Ronan Price. He edged two of his teammates for top honors, crossing the finish line in 16:12.9. Ike’s Spencer Stewart and Miguel Vargas, both seniors, placed second and third, respectively, in times of 16:13.4 and 16:13.9.
West Valley senior Colton Hoggarth and Wenatchee senior Miguel Viramontes rounded out the top five in the boys race with clockings of 16:15.3 and 16:49.9.
The fastest clocking in the girls three-mile race was turned in by West Valley senior Kaili Keefe. She sped to the finish line in 18:57.4. Hot on her heels, just three seconds back, was Ike sophomore Erica Simison - the runner-up in 19:00.6.
The sophomore Borrego was one of only seven girls to cross the finish in under 20 minutes. She placed sixth with a clocking of 19:53.6.
Just five spots behind Borrego, in 11th place from the 46-runner field, was teammate Jeniya Guillen. She posted a time of 20:36.5.
Sunnyside’s cross-country squads are next scheduled to compete at the WIAA Class 4A District 6 Championships on Thursday, Oct. 29, at Yakima’s Franklin Park. From there, the top runners will qualify to move on to the Nov. 7 State meet.
