YAKIMA Two Sunnyside High School harriers have advanced from District competition to the WIAA 4A State Cross-Country Meet.
Sophomore Dallas Borrego and senior Jeniya Guillen managed ‘Top 12’ finishes at the District meet yesterday, and in the process have earned the right to move on to State.
The State meet will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course.
None of Sunnyside’s harriers from its boys squad will be moving on to State.
The best the Grizzlies could muster in Thursday’s District boys race at Yakima’s Franklin Park was junior Griffey Sarmiento’s 22nd-place finish.
Borrego and Guillen, in yesterday’s three-mile girls race at District, placed seventh and eighth, respectively.
Borrego, the underclassman, sped to a clocking of 19:50.64. Guillen, the senior, was hot on her heels in 19:55.98.
The girls race winner was West Valley senior Kaili Keefe. She clocked the winning time of 19:05.06, three seconds faster than second-place finishing Erica Simison, an Eisenhower sophomore.
Also representing the Sunnyside High School girls squad at District yesterday – from a 47-harrier field - were freshman Nora Cisneros-Toscano, 42nd in 24:07.89, junior Cecilia Guillen, 44th in 24:39.70 and freshman Alondra Garcia, 45th in 24:43.15.
Sarmiento, the junior, was the top finisher for Sunnyside’s boys in the three-mile District meet race. He posted the 22nd fastest time, a clocking of 17:40.35.
The boys race winner was Ike senior Spencer Stewart (15:46.03).
The Cadets grabbed six of the top eight spots in the boys race yesterday.
Besides Sarmiento, the Sunnyside High School boys squad was represented at Districts yesterday by sophomore Emmanuel Ocampo, 26th in 17:46.52; sophomore Abraham Arreola, 40th in 18:54.92; junior Boshyar Madera, 42nd in 19:01.80; senior Anthony Castelleja, 45th in 19:35.68; sophomore Malcom Sanchez, 47th in 19:43.63; and senior Moses Ramirez-Ceballos, 49th in 20:27.92.
