Three charged in high-speed chase

— A driver who led officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle is being held on $25,000 bail after a hearing in Yakima Superior Court yesterday.

Alejandro Ruiz, 22, of Sunnyside, is charged with eluding, possession of a stolen vehicle, malicious mischief and possession of stolen property, according to probable cause documents.

Passengers, Alejandro Ray Medina, 19, of Sunnyside, and Ruben Trey Salinas, 18, of Grandview, face charges of possession of stolen property. Salinas is also charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, records show.

The chase began Saturday just outside of Grandview after an officer spotted the vehicle at the intersection of Mountain View and South County Line roads.

Three people were in the vehicle southbound on South County Line Road, police said. When an officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, Ruiz accelerated and attempted to elude police,.

The vehicle turned onto Old Prosser Highway, ran a stop sign and through bushes, records show, noting the vehicle reached speeds of more than 90 mph in a 50 mph zone.

A passenger allegedly threw a golf ball-sized bag containing a white substance out the window, records show.

Ruiz nearly hit a worker surveying a field and almost caused a head-on collision with another vehicle while driving through curves on the wrong lane, records show.

The car went airborne when Ruiz attempted to cut a corner through a hop field, records show.

The vehicle eventually stopped at the side of a ravine. Both passengers surrendered, but the driver fled on foot and was caught about half-a-mile away, records show.

A search of the damaged vehicle turned up open containers of alcohol, a bag of marijuana and some items reportedly stolen during a Benton County burglary, records show.

The stolen items included a safe, a gift box containing cash, women’s underwear, fishing lures and a cell phone, police said, estimating the value of the items to be more than $750.
