Memorial golf tournament set

Event taking place Sept. 11 at Black Rock

— The Board of Directors of MERIT Resource Services will be hosting the Bill Hayes golf tournament Sept. 11.

The tournament is going on its 14th year and was founded in memory of former board member, Bill Hayes.

It is the only fundraising event MERIT hosts.

Funds raised during the event go towards the agency’s annual Howard Kelleher Memorial scholarship awards.

Each year, MERIT offers high school seniors from the Yakima Valley and Kittitas County $1,000 scholarships towards their plans after high school.

Last year, the agency gave three seniors $1,000 scholarships each. It will help the same number of seniors this year.

Past scholarship winners include students from schools in the Lower Valley, such as Grandview and Sunnyside.

The golf tournament is a four-person scramble, with prizes awarded in other categories. They include low gross team, low net teams, long drive, longest putt and closest to the pin.

Players will get a chance to win a new Ford courtesy of Tom Denchel Ford if they make a hole-in-one.

There will be two divisions, male and female, with mixed teams automatically put in men’s division.

Registration includes green fees, prize fund and award banquet.

The shotgun start begins at 9 a.m. at Black Rock Creek Golf Course, 31 Ray Road.
