Winery reveals plans for upgrades

— A winery with widened sidewalks and an outdoor seating area near Central Park and downtown are in the works for the city’s old Water Works building.

Winemaker Coman Dinn this morning unveiled his plans for a winery at the 85-year-old building at the corner of Grant Avenue and Fourth Street.

Dinn leases the 5,000 square-foot building from the Port of Sunnyside, which last summer acquired it from the city of Sunnyside to develop as an incubator for a winery or brewery business.

The former Hogue Cellars winemaker gave Daybreak Rotarians a tour this morning of work already underway. He said the interior of the building has been cleaned out to prepare for construction and renovation.

He hopes to open Co Dinn Cellars next year.

Dinn is already in the process of releasing his first vintage, thanks to space he uses at the Yakima Valley Community College incubator facility in Grandview.

Preliminary architectural drawings of the Co Dinn Cellars include a glass floor in the tasting room, a large conference room for community meetings and a large winemaking processing plant.

“I have been wanting to be in this building since I first moved to the Valley in 1996,” he said.

Port Executive Director Jay Hester said money is in place to begin the renovation the old water works building into a state-of-the-art downtown winery destination.

Hester has also indicated plans to retain the building’s historical features, including the old metal “Water Department” lettering.

The port and Dinn also plan to install brick-lined sidewalks and retro street lights similar to the recent downtown upgrades.

A rusty crane once used to work on city wells is expected to be incorporated into the design of Co Dinn Cellars as work begins on the renovation of the city public works building in the coming months.

Last October, the port received more than $500,000 from Yakima County to rehabilitate the building into a winery and wine tasting room.

The port is pumping $130,000 of its own money into the project.

Dinn’s vision includes a wine-making facility, crush pad, tasting room, a wine cellar, widened sidewalks and outdoor seating.

Co Dinn Cellars will be the second winery to locate near downtown, joining Cote Bonneville at 1413 E. Edison Ave. That winery opened a year ago in a refurbished train depot building.
