Hop acreage at all-time high

— U.S. hop acreage increased 18.5 percent this year, reaching a record high.

The number of acres dedicated to hops now totals 53,213.

The surge is due to the increase in craft breweries, Washington Hop Commission spokesman Jaki Brophy said.

Craft breweries in the U.S. are continuing to surpass the previous record of 4,131 breweries set in 1873, Brophy said.

“Due to this growth and increasingly higher hopping rates, demand for hops has increased heavily, and the US hop industry has responded with major increases for the fourth straight year,” Brophy said.
