— A pageant to raise awareness and cash for a two-year-old Sunnyside toddler’s medical plight is planned Saturday.

The American Glamour Queens is having its “Under the Sea” Preliminary Pageant at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Best Western Grape Vine Inn, 1849 Quail Lane.

“The candidates are raising money to help the family of Tiago Viernes, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy for an aggressive form of neuroblastoma at Children’s Hospital in Seattle,” pageant organizer Maricruz Garza said.

His parents, Conan and Geomara Viernes, have moved to the Seattle area to be closer to their son’s medical facility while he undergoes treatment, Garza said.

“We feel bad for the family and no baby should be going through this,” she said.

To help encourage candidates to raise money, pageant leaders will honor the child who raises the most money by pageant time.

Garza said the funds will be donated to benefit Tiago.

All participants will have a bag with their names on it. “Anyone can donate to their favorite contestant,” she said.

Whoever has the most money collected in their bags will win an extra crown.

Garza said Tiago’s Aunt Sonia Magaña will give an update on her nephew’s condition during the pageant.

She said another fundraiser is planned at 6 p.m. July 22 at Reale Hall, 600 Stover Road, Grandview.

Magaña is organizing that event, which will feature music by Avion. The family has also set up a “Go Fund Me” account to help cover expenses.

Garza said there is no charge to attend Saturday’s pageant.
