Sunnyside and Prosser firefighters carry Kim Cornwell from the crash scene yesterday afternoon.

— One person is dead and two others injured following a crash yesterday near Milepost 84 on westbound Interstate 82.

The Washington State Patrol said the crash happened just before 3 p.m. when a 2001 Ford pick-up driven by Kim Cornwell of Outlook left the roadway, flipped and came to rest on its top.

Two passengers were ejected, including James Wilcox, 68, of Sunnyside. He died at the scene, troopers said.

According to Daily Sun News records, Wilcox is a third-generation Sunnysider. His grandmother, Betty Iva Barber, moved here from Idaho.

Troopers said Wilcox and the other passenger, Ashley Null of Tacoma, were not wearing seatbelts.

According to initial reports, Null is pregnant and had to be extracted from the vehicle.

Null, 28, was taken to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, as was Cornwell, 51. Troopers said he was wearing a seatbelt.

The cause of the crash is under investigation and charges are pending, troopers said.

The State Patrol also reported it did not know if alcohol or drugs were factors.

“The collision report and the case file will take some time to complete before it can be released through public disclosure,” Lt. Kiley Conaway said of the ongoing investigation.

Police and Fire Department officials were on scene, and called Sunnyside Fire Department for assistance.

Troopers closed one lane of Interstate 82 so emergency crews could respond to the crash.
