Trump’s impact good for our region

With a Donald Trump presidency becoming reality, what does that mean for us here in Eastern Washington?

For starters, one of Trump’s campaign pledges is to crack down on illegal immigration and famously build a wall Mexico would pay for.

We’re not sure if he’ll follow through with a wall, but even in his conciliatory speech last night he echoed that push to enforce immigration laws.

Trump said he would look out for all Americans and “citizens.”

That last word is important, because it applies to those who live in this country legally. In other words, his dream to improve lives in this country applies to those who are here legally.

There’s nothing wrong with that, nothing wrong with enforcing the rules of the land.

But if Trump indeed enacts sweeping change that deports illegal aliens, what will that mean for agriculturally-dependent Eastern Washington? Will growers face labor shortages? Will food prices surge due to fewer crops harvested?

We don’t believe so. We believe farmers will adapt, as they always do.

We believe it will pressure the federal government to finally deliver and implement a consistent immigration policy.

Trump has also pledged to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. With Republican majorities in the U.S. House and Senate, he might just accomplish that.

But what health care alternative will he and Congress offer?

We hope it will be better than “Obamacare.” The program is offering fewer and fewer choices with insurance companies pulling out. All the while, rates are skyrocketing.

The result is an Obamacare system that costs more and offers less than the private pay system so many in this country rely on.

Whether president-elect Donald Trump’s administration will make America great again remains to be seen.

There are divides to bridge and wounds to heal.

But let’s give him a chance to govern. A Trump presidency should be good for Eastern Washington.
