— One local boxer has two wins to his name and aspires to claim more.

This past Saturday, Erick Ruiz, 17, fought 140 lb. Carlos Hernandez of Y-PAL in Yakima and won the match about 1.5 minutes into the second round.

His coach Cruz Ramos of Dungeon Boxing said he fight three 2-minute rounds..

Ruiz first started training a little more than a year ago in July 2015.

His family didn’t have a lot of money when he was younger and Ruiz said he has always aspired to become a boxer.

“I know it’s a sport that pays off,” Ruiz said. “It keeps me disciplined and motivates me to give it my best.”

He said he has hopes of making boxing his career, knowing the sport requires a lot of training and dedication.

Saturday’s fight wasn’t his first. He has been in two other matches, losing the first and winning the second.

“I learned from my second fight what I had to do in order to win,” Ruiz said. “It taught me where I needed to work.”

Since that first win, he worked on pacing himself and moving in the ring, he said.

“My upper body movement was important,” he said of the successful second victory.

Dungeon Boxing is associated with USA Boxing. Ramos said there are rarely fights locally. Therefore, boxers like Ruiz must do a lot of traveling.

“There are a lot of expenses,” he said.

Another opportunity to compete in the ring is set to take place Oct. 22.

“I am hoping Erick can compete in it — he is the only one of my boxers who is fight-ready,” Ramos said.

“I think he’s doing great — he’s committed to training,” Ramos said of Ruiz.

Ruiz is self-motivated, running and training on his own when he is unable to train with his coach, Ramos said.

“He has a bright future ahead of him.”
