GRANGER The Spartans girls soccer team scored another victory last night, a 2-1 win at home over Wahluke.
“We’ve never had seven wins in a season,” coach Stephanie King said of her team’s 7-7 record.
It took just 4 minutes for Granger to strike the back of the net — Cynthia Cuevas found an opening in the Warriors’ defense and booted the ball home. The halftime score was 1-0.
In the 53rd minute, Wahluke equalized the match when Juliana Barajas slipped the ball past keeper Jasmin Rodriguez. A minute later, the Spartans delivered the deciding shot.
“Anahi Collas’ goal was quite impressive,” King said of the corner kick. “She bent the ball around the keeper and it slid inside the far post.
“Both teams were stunned before realizing what had happened.”
Rodriguez denied the Warriors on five scoring attempts, while Wahluke keeper Brenda Nolasco kept the Spartans from delivering the ball between the crossbars four times.
“My girls have been focusing on completing their passes and controlling the ball more, and it is paying off,” King said.
Granger had eight shots on goal; the Warriors six.
The Spartans travel to La Salle tonight and finish the season Tuesday at home against Naches.
