— Seasonal pumpkin cabbage and kale combine to create a welcome salute to autumn.

Ninth Street resident Nora Gonzalez is taking advantage of the lower valley’s bounty of fall colors.

Her front porch takes to heart this year’s trend in stepping up the curb appeal.

Her porch railing is lined with pumpkins of different sizes and colors. She also uses various sizes of ornamental kale, and grasses in her arrangements.

The fall colors also go with her bright red door and the color of the porch entryway. A fresh fall wreath on the door completes the picture of hospitality within.

“It just makes me happy to decorate the porch,” she said.

This year, the color palette isn’t limited to orange pumpkins and corn stalks,

Home designers are encouraging homeowners to add all types of color to their front porch. They suggest matching up from starry sky blue to apple green or shades of kale purple to red mums.

And don’t be afraid to add extra color with a new welcome mat or planters. Small bales of straw are always nice. Try using a rustic wooden stool for extra height on the stoop.

“It’s fun to pick a theme and just go for it,” Gonzalez said.
