Teams seek state berths

— Three Lower Yakima Valley swim teams begin preliminaries at the District 5, 6, 7 swim championships at Washington State University.

The finals will take place tomorrow, and the Top 3 in each event earn automatic berths to state Nov. 11-12 at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.

Grandview, Mabton and Prosser girls compete in all 11 preliminary events today.

Prosser’s Ali Cox, Abby Cromwell, Rachel Blount and Kaylin Sanders qualified for a third seed in the 200 yard medley relay, and Grandview’s Taylor Ebbelaar, Maxine Ocampo, Jaelei Grant and Felicia Pena are eighth seed.

Cox seeded No. 10 in the 100 yard freestyle, is a member of the 200 yard freestyle relay team and is the No. 10 seed in the 100 yard backstroke event.

Cromwell competes in the 200 yard individual medley, as will Rachel Forrister and Grandview’s Chloe Pederson.

Cromwell also competes in the 100 yard breaststroke. She teams up with Forrister, Maia Wajtkowiak and Brooklyn Shultz in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Events Blount qualified for include the 100 yard butterfly and the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Sanders competes in the 50 yard freestyle as the No. 3 seed, the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Ebbelaar competes in three additional events: the 50 yard freestyle, the 200 freestyle relay and the 100 yard backstroke.

Ocampo represents the Greyhounds in the 100 yard butterfly, the 100 yard breaststroke and the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Grant swims in the 100 yard freestyle and the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Pena qualified for the 100 yard freestyle and is a member of the 200 yard freestyle relay team.

Competing in the 200 yard freestyle is Prosser’s Halley Carrick. Teammate Amaya Shafer competes in the 50 yard freestyle, and Forrister competes in the 100 yard butterfly.

Grandview’s Caitlin McGhan also competes in the 100 yard butterfly event.

Shultz and Pederson join their teammates in the 100 yard freestyle event.

In the 500 freestyle will be Mabton’s Katy Ott, Grandview’s Kendall Roberson and Carrick.

Roberson and Carrick also join their respective 200 yard freestyle relay teams.

McGhan and Emma Febus of the Greyhounds compete in the 100 yard backstroke, as does Jaela Griffiths of the Mustangs.

Ott finishes the competition in the 100 yard breaststroke, as will Sarah Winder of Prosser.

Pederson, McGhan and Roberson join Ocampo on the 400 yard freestyle relay team, while Forrister, Wojtkowiak and Shultz join Cromwell in the same event.
