Eisenhower wins four races at meet

— The host of yesterday’s Big 9 cross country meet won both the girls and boys junior varsity and varsity races.

Eisenhower scored 15 points in the boys JV race, 18 points in the varsity race, 36 in the girls JV race and 28 points in the varsity race.

Sunnyside and Bickleton competed at the meet, but the Pirates raced with the JV boys.

Competing for Bickleton were Michael Gannon, Joseph Cummings and Scott McBride. Gannon was 14th, with a time of 19:44.86. The first-place finisher was Jesus Gonzalez of the Cadets. He crossed the finish line in 18:25.47.

Cummings clocked a time of 23.21.14 for 74th, and McBride didn’t post a time.

Sunnyside’s JV harriers earned seventh place, with 188 points. Freshman Angel Garcia posted the best time among the JV runners, 20:26.40. That was good for a personal record.

The varsity team also was seventh in its race, garnering 169 points.

Senior Griffey Sarmiento clocked a time of 18:02.00, while junior Michael Condie finished in 18:26.27 and senior Joe Rodriguez III completed the race in 18:33.89.

Also competing for the Grizzlies were Abraham Arreola, Arturo Palacios, Silas Jasso and Kaden Maxwell.

The Sunnyside girls did not compete at the varsity level, given their experience, coach George Paulus said.

But, the team earned seventh place in the JV race with 149 points.

The fastest among the Grizzlies was Yairel Quiroz-Jimenez, a sophomore. She clocked 24:29.56.

The winner of the race was Kaitlyn Ditter of Eisenhower, who clocked 22:31.27.

Sunnyside’s Lilian Froese-Rail finished in 26:30.25, Sierra Cavazos clocked 26:53.28, Mireya Sanchez-Cisneros crossed the finish in 29:14.96 and Maria Carrillo-Espinoza completed the race in 32:25.17.

Sunnyside competes in the Apple Ridge Invitational in Cowiche at 11 a.m. tomorrow.

Bickleton travels to the Bridgett Nelson Memorial Invitational Sept. 23 at Sorosis Park in The Dalles, Ore.
