MABTON The Vikings suffered their second loss of the season Friday, falling 20-25 to Liberty Christian.
Although the game was back-and-forth with the former 1B — now 2B — team, Mabton fell short, Viking coach Pat Zavala said.
The Patriots scored two touchdowns in the opening quarter. Mabton got the ball into the red zone, but failed to convert on its first two possessions, he said.
It wasn’t until the waning moments of the half the Vikings finally scored. Max Ruiz punched it in.
Fabian Ruiz failed to convert on an onside kick on the next play.
Liberty Christian, before the clock ran out, took advantage of a fumble as Mabton was within scoring distance.
The Patriots recovered the ball and scored, taking a 20-6 lead to halftime.
Midway through the third quarter, the Vikings’ Jose Gonzalez of the Vikings scored; the point-after kick was blocked.
Liberty Christian closed the third quarter with another touchdown for a 26-12 lead.
In the final quarter, Ruiz scored another touchdown for Mabton with two minutes remaining. The Vikings converted for two points.
