SEATTLE Despite having half of the teams in state football title games last season, only two teams from Eastern Washington will play in the annual Emerald City Kickoff Classic on Sept. 2.
Pullman and Gonzaga Prep are the only teams to make the cut in the eight-team event at Husky Stadium.
Pullman eliminated Prosser, 14-13, in the state 2A playoffs last year and Gonzaga Prep was eliminated before the playoffs began last season.
Pullman opens the event at 10 a.m. against Fife.
Western Washington teams in the classic this year are Eastside Catholic, Fife, Kennedy Catholic, Lincoln, O’Dea and Seattle Prep.
None of the teams were in the state 1B, 2B, A, 2A or 4A title games last year. And Kamiakin, of Kennewick, defeated O’Dea in the state 3A championship.
At 1 p.m., Game 2 of the Kickoff Classic pits Seattle Prep against Kennedy Catholic.
At 4 p.m., Game 3 features O’Dea against Lincoln.
The finale features Gonzaga Prep against Eastside Catholic at 7 p.m.
In addition to the Emerald City Kickoff Classic, the Emerald City Volleyball Invitational at Mercer Island High School takes place Sept. 1.
The all-westside tournament features Cleveland, Lynden Christian, Mercer Island and Seattle Prep.
Some of the top Eastern Washington teams left out of the classic include Kamiakin, Richland, Sunnyside, Royal, Connell, Odessa-Harrington, Liberty (Spangle), Deer Park, Ellensburg and others.
