Stage 2 Burn ban in effect for valley

— The Yakima County Regional Clean Air Authority issued a Stage 2 burn ban yesterday at noon, prohibiting the use of fireplaces and wood-burning stoves.

All outdoor burning is also prohibited until further notices, the agency’s Mark Edler said.

The ban was issued because stagnant air is expected to build up pollutants in the Lower Yakima Valley, he said.

Violating the burn ban could lead to civil penalties, he said.

Residents can use fireplaces and wood stoves if that is their only source of heat, he added.
