ZILLAH A Zillah policeman is on paid administrative leave while Yakima investigators look into a late Friday night officer-involved shooting.
Police Chief Jim Quantrell said he would release the officer’s name after he briefs the mayor and the city administrator today.
The incident began just after 11 p.m. when Toppenish police officers were trying to track down a man for several outstanding warrants, as well as eluding and drug charges.
According to Quantrell, officers stopped at a residence in the 200 block of First Avenue. A man came out of the residence with a black handgun, Quantrell said.
The man refused to drop the weapon, as police commanded, Quantrell said. A Zillah officer fired a single shot that struck the man.
Quantrell said officers on the scene provided aid to the man until he was transported by ambulance to a hospital.
Late yesterday, Quantrell said the injured man was in critical condition. The man was hit in the lower right torso.
The officer involved was placed on administrative leave while the Yakima Police Department conducts an independent investigation, he said..
It is customary to law enforcement to have outside investigators for shootings
