Musicians, actors needed for spring production

The play’s plot line

Bye Bye Birdie is a 1960s’ rock n’ roll musical that tells the story of Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley-style rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army.

For a final publicity stunt, his agent’s secretary decides that Conrad should bid a typical American teen-age girl goodbye with an all-American kiss.

Kim MacAfee in Sweet Apple, Ohio wins the honor.

The MacAfee household and the small town are turned upside down by all the attention.

Performances of Bye Bye Birdie will be April 27 and 28, with a Sunday matinee on April 29, and May 4, 5 at the Princess Theatre.

— Valley Theater Company has planned open auditions for performance musicians and actors for the spring 2018 production of Bye Bye Birdie in January at the Princess Theatre, 1228 Meade Ave.


Instrumentalists needed are a percussionist/drummer, saxophone player, guitar player, clarinet player and flute player, as well as rehearsal pianists.

Auditions take place at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 15, in the Green Room at the theater.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

Musicians must bring one prepared music piece of their choice to play solo. The prepared piece does not have to be related to Bye Bye Birdie, but a selection of similar style is preferred.

In addition, each musician will be given a Bye Bye Birdie piece in the key appropriate to his or her instrument to sight read and play with the ensemble.

Percussionists must provide their own sticks, brushes and mallets. The theater group will provide a drum set to use for auditions.

All other musicians must provide their own instruments. All participants in Valley Theater Company productions provide their talents on a volunteer basis.

The tentative rehearsal schedule for musicians will include eight to 12 “band-only” rehearsals, most likely on Tuesday or Thursday nights, as well as several rehearsals with the full cast.

Music Director David Riddle will coordinate exact rehearsal days with the selected musicians.

Those auditioning should bring their personal calendars with them to the audition.

Acting auditions take place at 6:45 p.m. in the Green Room Jan. 21 and 22 at the theatre.

Director Kimberly Starr encourages those auditioning to attend both nights.

Scripts are available beginning Tuesday for a three-day checkout by contacting Candace Andrews at 509-539-6764.

The cast calls for the leads, supporting, walk-on and chorus. Roles are available for teens, men and women. There is also a need for one boy who appears 8-11 years old.

Auditions will include singing, dancing and cold readings from the script.

Those auditioning do not need a prepared vocal piece. They will be taught a song from the show and will sing it in groups. Actors also will be taught a short dance and will perform it in groups.

Rehearsals will begin in January and will include Mondays and Thursdays for all actors, as well as Tuesdays for leading and supporting roles.

The production team includes Da Corsi; Candace Andrews, producer; Bethany Riddle, assistant producer; David Riddle, music director; Kathlyn Wolfe, choral director; and Marcie Wall, choreographer.

A $20 script deposit is required, and the deposit is fully refundable when the script is returned undamaged.
