Spartans open district with 62-20 win

— The Spartans advance to tomorrow’s district game against River View or La Salle.

The game will be played in Wapato or Sunnyside. Tip off was not available as of press time.

Granger’s 62-20 win over Kiona-Benton last night places the Bears in a loser-out game Saturday against the loser of the River View/La Salle game.

The Spartans took an early 15-9 lead in the first quarter of the district opener. They had a 32-12 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, the Bears were held to 8 points and were scoreless in the final stanza. Granger scored 14 and 16 points in the final two quarters.

Leading the Spartans with a game high 13 points was Jayleen Vasquez — 3 treys. Teammate Naya Roettger tallied 12 — 6 points from beyond the 3-point arc.

Assisting with the win with 9 points was Lily Stewart.

Teammate Emma Stewart tallied 8 points; Alexis Castro scored 7; Sophie Blodgett tallied 6 from treyland; Laynie Brien scored 3 points; and Keely Teel and Kaitlyn Roettger each tallied 2 points.

The Spartans had just three chances from the free throw line and Brien was the only one to drop her shot.

Scoring a team high 9 points for Kiona-Benton was Cierra Vickerman.

The Bears were 2-for-4 from the charity stripe. Mihaela Edwards and Nya Calzadillas dropped them in.

Tonight, the Granger boys travel to Warden for a 7 p.m. district opener.
