The Wapato Wolves girls basketball team came out on fire Friday night, claiming the Central Washington Athletic Conference district title by dunking Prosser, 58-51, at Eisenhower High School.
Janealle Sutterlict had a game-high 18 points for Wapato. Teammate Tarryn Hart posted 14 and Amanda Gonzalez 10. Marissa Cortes paced the Mustangs with 17 points, followed by teammate Asia Olivarez with 14.
Wapato jumped to a 16-15 first-quarter lead and expanded it to 31-28 by halftime. The Prosser girls struggled to put up points in the third quarter, posting only 9, six less than Wapato.
Down 46-37 at the end of three quarters, the Mustangs put up the first 5 points of the fourth quarter to close the gap to 4. But the Wolves scored 7 of the last 9 points to put the game out of reach and claim the district title.
Prosser scorers included Ali Cox with 8 points, Brandi Groenveld with 5, Brooke Wheeler 4 and Ashley Magana 3.
Other Wapato scorers included Alexis Garza and Chehalis Aleck with 6 each, and Patricia Hickey with 4.
The No. 9-ranked Mustang girls play No. 16 Franklin Pierce at 8 p.m. Friday at Chiawana High School, 8125 W. Argent Road, Pasco.
