GRANGER Two area boys teams knocked off their opponents Saturday night to remain ranked in the Top 20 in the state 1A basketball polls.
The Granger Spartans topped the Naches Valley Rangers, 48-40. And the Zillah Leopards knocked off LaSalle, 68-48.
Zillah hosts Granger at 7 p.m. today in a South Central-West Athletic Conference matchup.
As of Monday, Granger (10-4), was ranked No. 15.
Neighboring league rival Zillah (11-0) was ranked No. 2. The Leopards are the only unbeaten team.
Against Naches Valley, Trevor Smith paced the Spartans with a team-high 10 points as Jake Slade added 8 points and 10 rebounds.
Granger’s Ulyses Diaz also scored 8 points. Teammates Joseph Soliz had 9, Daniel Nava 7 and Jose Alvarez 4.
Granger dominated the court early, taking a 14-8 first quarter lead over the Rangers. Naches Valley closed the gap in the second quarter by 2 points, only to slide back 7 points in the third.
With three in the bag, Granger held a 36-25 lead.
Naches Valley added 15 points in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Spartans who also scored 12.
The Rangers were led by Sean Coyne with 13 points.
In Union Gap, it was all Zillah as Nate Whitacker posted 25 points and Antonio Salinas 14. Brock Ellis had 7, Trey Delp 6, Parker Sandlin 3 and Ryan Slack, Andres Ponce and Jayson Burge each had 2.
Jeff Vargas paced La Salle with 15 points. The Lightning dropped to 4-8 on the season.
La Salle came out shooting Saturday, jumping out to a 12-11 first quarter lead, but slipped back 28-31 by the half.
Zillah never looked back, outscoring La Salle by 4 points in the third quarter and 13 in the fourth.
