ZILLAH No. 1-ranked Granger came out on top at Monday’s wrestling dual against league rival Zillah, 64-4.
The Leopards won just two matches — at 106 and 182 pounds. Nathaniel Mendoza won the lower weight class by a 3-0 decision over Angel Roman of the Spartans, and a 5-0 decision went the way of Chase Pigeon, who faced Granger’s Roman Olivera.
Mendoza is ranked No. 3 and Roman is No. 7.
Pigeon is ranked No. 3 and Olivera is No. 8 in the state.
Granger’s Chuco Cisneros at 126 pounds, Franky Almaguer at 145, Tony Almaguer at 152, Robert Berger at 160, Juan “Bubba” Zamora at 195, Noel Orozco at 220 and Jose “Chubz” Mendoza at 285 all won by pin.
Cisneros pinned Jared Garcia in the first period.
Franky Almaguer pinned Neo Gasco in the first round; Tony Almaguer pinned Quinton Rogers in the second period.
Edgar Rojas succumbed to Berger in the first period and Fermin Martinez was subdued by Zamora in the first period.
Orozco pinned Kolton Ruggles in the first round and Mendoza subdued Luis Briones in the third.
Four matches were won by decision:
Jeremiah Salcedo of the Spartans won the 113-pound bout over Dawson Husted by a 10-1 major decision.
Diego Isiordia won bu technical fall (16-1) over Emmanuel Tonscoso of the Leopards.
A 3-0 decision over Wade Koerner of Zillah was secured by Juan Isiordia.
J.J. Arteaga of Granger won a 12-7 decision over Eric De la Rosa.
Most of the Spartans are ranked in the Top 10 at their weight classes statewide.
Franky Almaguer and Orozco are both ranked No. 1 in the 1A classification. Zamora is ranked No. 2, and Salcedo and Juan Isiordia are No. 3.
Cisneros and Tony Almaguer are ranked No. 5. Robert Vasquez, who won by forfeit Monday, is No. 6 in the 170-pound weight class.
Berger and Diego Isiordia are No. 7, and Olivera is No. 8.
