— Hoping to become a role model for community youth, Carina Cuevas, 16 is seeking to be the next Miss Sunnyside.

Cuevas is one of 11 Sunnyside High School juniors who will spend the next two months preparing for the 2017-2018 Miss Sunnyside Pageant on Sept. 16, at the Sunnyside High School auditorium, 1801 E. Edison Ave.

The youngest of four children, Cuevas is the daughter of Odila and Ramon Cuevas. She has two older brothers and a sister, Ramon, 26, Yanet, 23, and Ulysses, 20.

She said she wished to seek the title of Miss Sunnyside to learn more about her community.

“I also want to help make it a good environment for everyone,” Cuevas said.

She believes so strongly in a clean environment, she plans to create a community recycling awareness program as her platform should she be selected as Miss Sunnyside.

Cuevas said she is interested in recycling because of her family’s commitment to helping keep their neighborhood clean.

“I’d like to host events, talk with students, and do school recycle drives to remind people of the need for recycling,” she said.

Cuevas is also active in other ways in the community, having worked on the Loving Sunnyside program helping to paint houses. “I worked on five homes,” she said.

Among her high school activities, she recently completed her first year on the school tennis team, playing varsity.

She plans to attend Yakima Valley College’s Running Start program to earn an associate of arts in nursing. “I plan to transfer to a university to pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing.

In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family. She said her favorite class is anything to do with math.

For the talent portion of the Sept. 16 pageant, Cuevas will perform a folkloric dance.
