New church plans open house

— A celebration to mark the official opening of the Spring of Life Church will be July 8, at the church, 501 Concord Ave.

A 2 p.m. program will include music, a message with a social gathering to welcome members and guests, Pastor Jorge Huerta said.

He and former church members have been working on an outreach into the Grandview community for several months, holding several special services at the church. He said the church had been closed over a year ago.

“We began seeking permission to reopen the church months ago,” he said.

In April, Easter and Palm Sunday services were held, and the congregation has continued to grow since that time, Huerta said.

“We will be giving the church as new identity as a bilingual ministry,” he said.

“I’m really encouraged as pastor to have something to offer to the community,” he said. Part of the new church’s mission will be to reach out to the youth and teens of the neighborhood.

“We want to be a place where they feel safe to go to get help,” Huerta said.

Huerta has been the pastor of the Iglesia El Calvario, 1810 Morgan Road, Sunnyside since 2009, said regular Sunday services will be at 4 p.m. at the Spring of Life Church. A Tuesday prayer meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m.

The community is welcome to attend the Saturday services and regular services.
