Zillah boys win 1A basketball championship

— The Zillah boys basketball team claimed the 1A state title in the Yakima Valley SunDome on Sunday after defeating Freeman, 69-53.

The Leopards got off to an early start, outpacing the Scotties, 16-11, in the first quarter. Keeping up the pace in the second stanza with a 16-10 scoring chase, Zillah had a 32-21 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Leopards outscored Freeman, 17-14. They clinched the title with a 20-18 fourth quarter.

Pacing the Leopards with 25 points was Nate Whitaker, who scored 13 of those points in the first half.

Zillah scored 18 points off turnovers, 46 in the paint.

The Leopards had 10 second-chance points and 12 on the fast-break.

Freeman scored 6 points on turnovers and 32 in the paint. The Scotties had 11 second-chance points and 4 on the fast-break.
