— More than 200 girls turned out Saturday night and Sunday to celebrate Women’s Wrestling Week by attending a freestyle/Greco-Roman clinic and then wrestling in the annual Columbia Cup.

Teams from Mabton, Grandview, Sunnyside and Granger represented the Lower Yakima Valley at the event.

“Some of these girls are just as tough as boys,” Sunnyside Little Grapplers Coach Daniel Guillen said. “Wrestling is evolving; it’s not just a boys sport, it’s a girls sport ,too.”

Guillen said the all-girl tournament was a great opportunity for girls to learn the sport and show what they can do, noting many girls came from across the Pacific Northwest, including some expected to make state and national teams.

“Colleges are recruiting, so this is a good opportunity for girls to further their education, too.”

The Sunnyside Little Grapplers have 12 girls on the team — more than 20 percent of local wrestlers ages 5-14 who are competing this spring.

Popeye Wrestling Club coach Bob Johnson of Grandview was unable to be reached for comment.

The next all-girls tournaments are Saturday in Belfair and the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Centralia.
